Escaping GIF’s 256-color cage
GIF is limited to 256 colors and one-bit transparency — pixels are either fully opaque or fully invisible, which is why GIF logos have those crunchy white halos. PNG has neither limit: full 24-bit color plus smooth alpha edges. Converting a GIF still to PNG stops the format from degrading it any further.

- Is transparency preserved?
- Yes, when converting to a format that supports an alpha channel (PNG, WebP, AVIF). For formats without transparency (JPG, BMP), you can pick a background color for transparent areas.
- Is my image uploaded?

- What is AVIF and should I use it?
