What "auto" means here

There is no cloud model and no guesswork involved. The tool builds a histogram of your image — a count of how many pixels hold each value, separately for red, green and blue — then finds where each channel actually begins and ends. The extreme 0.4% at each end is deliberately ignored, so a single specular highlight or one crushed shadow pixel cannot define the range. What is left is stretched to fill the full 0–255 scale.

The effect is that a photo whose darkest pixel was a murky gray gets a real black point back, and one whose brightest pixel never reached white gets its highlights back. Because each color channel is measured independently, an overall color cast — the blue of open shade, the yellow of indoor light — is largely corrected at the same time.

When it works, and when it doesn't

Auto levels is at its best on images that are flat: photos shot through haze or a window, dull scans, faded prints, screenshots that came out washed out, and anything underexposed but not clipped. On a photo that already uses the full tonal range it will do almost nothing, which is the correct behavior rather than a failure.

It can overreach on images that are legitimately low-contrast by design — a foggy landscape, a high-key studio shot on white, a deliberately dark moody frame. On those, switch it off and use brightness and contrast by hand. Comparing is one button hold away.

A starting point, not a black box

Auto levels sits alongside every manual control rather than replacing them, and it is applied first so the sliders act on an already-normalized image. A typical sequence is one click of auto, a small contrast nudge, and a touch of saturation. Is my image uploaded to adjust it?
No. Every adjustment is computed on a canvas inside your browser, so the photo never leaves your device and no server ever sees it.
How do I make an image black and white?
Set the “Black & white” slider to 100% — or click the B&W look, which also adds a little contrast so the result does not look flat. Noir goes further with a much harder contrast curve.
What does inverting the colors do?
It replaces every color with its opposite, which turns a photo into a negative: white becomes black, blue becomes orange. It is how you read a scanned film negative, and a quick way to flip a screenshot to a dark version.
What is the difference between brightness and contrast?
Brightness moves every tone up or down together, so the whole picture gets lighter or darker. Contrast pushes light and dark tones apart, which adds punch — or, in the negative direction, flattens the image into a soft, hazy look.
What does Auto levels do?
It measures each color channel of your photo, ignores the extreme 0.4% at each end, and stretches what is left across the full range. Washed-out, hazy or underexposed shots usually snap back to life with a single click.
